Lover’s Advice

\"Roger Freeing Angelica\" by Jean Auguste M. Ingres

Theseus on Saving Andromeda

It was never about heroics. No,

it was political and a matter

of position. I’d rather the splatter

of her blood had stained that stone! Didn’t know

until much later what a nag could grow

from a princess saved; oh! how this latter

Andromeda vexes me. No satyr

would bother these days . . . Let your no be no

lest some fair damsel make you a gelding

fit for domestic life and the road past

tense in your present perfect life! Wedding

a princess is such a far cry from last

innocence and the sport of just bedding

maidens. Run, Romeo, run away fast!

  1. There are so many primo lines here, David, but several that jump out for me are:

    “Didn’t know
until much later what a nag could grow
from a princess saved;” -> nor gnarly grump from grand knave, surely..hee hee

    “Let your no be no
lest some fair damsel make you a gelding
fit for domestic life” -> harks back to biblical ‘let your no be no’ and no gelding for me! Bachelor’s motto!

“Run, Romeo, run away fast!” -> no explanation needed ;>

I love the tone of this poem and its honesty.. :) Plus, I love the artwork accompanying your poems, David.

  2. Thanks Janet! Kind of a weird mood for me, but it’s a fun little sonnet.
I use the paintings for prompts. Sometimes knowingly – others not so much.
