At the end of a Good Book

I read your book
choking on certain words
images gagging me
constricting heart and throat
for six days now
hostage as you barrage me
horrid image after horrid image
life and death and love
sex and something more vulgar
and your incessant culinary terms
tossed at me as though
I had actually in my experience
some referent on which to anchor
ships of metaphor . . .
now I reach the far shore
your Inferno both ice and flame
and I wish, deep in the shards
of my shattered heart
that the back cover were mine,
lid to the coffin
and my dénouement forever past
