Her Life Dying

she spends her life dying, a way for her
to harvest attention because she thinks
she’s too plain, too boring, too uncultured,
not educated or intellectual
enough to attract the kind of people
she wants to be around. illness is her
excuse to withdraw from the rabid world
in which she never learned to feel at home.

in her mind, the real contagion is life;
it breeds and spreads and infects everything,
taking over the world as though it were
the sole reason for all of creation,
but how can it be when all life is made
to age and fade and eventually to die.
