Awake at Night

she will lie awake beside her lover
and wonder of the path that brought him here;
what dark journey beneath his footsteps falls
back into the past before their inter-
section? she’ll ponder her own reaching back
to memories she wished were litter out
on the highway’s edge, where winds will blow leaves
and tumbleweeds and civilization’s
detritus out into the wilderness
for the devil to tempt another with
and storms will move earth and water, cover
over a million sins, wash away all
our pollution into the sea, or bury
it away from recall waking to the night.
