The Vulnerable

she has a way of making herself small,
smaller than others her size, though she grew
up of average size.     this is a thing I’ve
observed among survivors of abuse
physical and psychological, this
shrinking in the presence of insecurity
and also an outsized puffing expression
in the face of bullies and threats, because
size matters in the world of threat and terror,
dominant and submissive.     what the strong
don’t understand is that the weak lack no
strength, they simply cloak themselves submissive
in vulnerability.     backed into
corners, all creatures will rip and tear for life.
