Happy as Choice

the sky is blue above those striated
clouds. here below, I am not so blue, though
yesterday was a pestilent day if
ever I had one. these women, one deaf,
yelling at each other to be heard, and
the elder sister is feeling her oats
this morning and being bossier than
I’ve yet seen her. she seems to have switched roles
now, from guest to elder sister, empress
of this little hovel just off the illinois
river and up the hill. I’m not bothering
to be bothered this morning by their noise,
and I’m determined this is a good day
no matter its distractions, a good day.
