birds outside my bedroom window subdued
in the dim morning light, claustrophobic
beneath oppressive cover of clouds. rain
seems the order of the day, and it’s about
time we had a shower to cool these hot winds,
unseasonable they say due to global
warming and climate change correlated
to over-consumption of petroleum
products and our past century’s excess—
mammoth carbon footprint like a blue bruise
upon the environment’s fragile spine . . .
but the birds seem more eager to chatter
about nesting and feeding and gossip
than they do to discuss science and mankind.
