tuesday afternoon lazy

we sip sweet tea from old mason jars
watching the neighbor on his rider mow
she has just dusted the roses and grapevine
against early spring threats of grub and beetle
an empty bourbon bottle mocks us
as armadas of cumulus clouds gather
to stage for some re-enactment later
after the afternoon has grown hot
its humidity gathering, charging, building
toward a rolling, rumbling crescendo . . .

and now we must move inside
to mimic nature and ride out storms
all our own of a lazy tuesday
