sunday drive

just a short jaunt down to double springs
high puffy clouds intermitting sunshine
the dog and I for a hike among headstones
he takes his leash in his teeth and saunters
down the blacktop path between sections
plastic flowers abounding and now others
come, a family to memorialize, filling
the pavilion with nylon lawn chairs
two coolers heavy with ice, beer, and soda
and the pitbull no longer welcome here

we drive away toward another
park, one more open to hikers,
and the road invites miles
as the verdant, hilled Kentucky
landscape eases past the windows
I turn upon a country lane
skunk ambling by pays no heed
to the barking dog, head lolling
out the window and fierce grin
redolent with Sunday joy
