traffic jam

caught in traffic yesterday,   thirty cars
lining the on-ramp accessing Circle
due to two police cars off the merge lane
making report on a two-car collision
caused by a motorist on a cell phone
ignoring another trying to merge,
it occurred to me to find an alternate
route   —   road rage used to be my copilot   —
but a few deep breaths and a smile against
mean red blues,   and I realized my time
was as plentiful as the sunshine here
in kentucky’s commonwealth,   having left
ten minutes early against this sort of thing;
a car is only a cage if you make it one.
